Quoting directly from the liner notes written by Akhmad Alfan Rahadi on the Yes No Wave Records website, “Ache is an emotive punk band based in Tangerang, consisting of Rizkan on vocals and bass, Putra on drums, and Ayam on guitar. The band is also a fusion of members from groups like San-Ei! and Rejected Kids.”

According to the press release received directly by the editorial team at Backstage Whisp, this project can be considered a deeply personal dream of Rizkan, who was previously known for his work with Rizkan Records, to have his own recorded album. Reportedly, Rizkan had to wait 12 years for his long-held ambition of being in a band to finally become a reality.

Ache, much like Rizkan himself, is not one for unnecessary formalities. At least, this is evident in the straightforwardness of their press release. Indirectly, they seem to treat the written narratives found in their own press materials as nothing more than embellishments—though, of course, it would still be enjoyable to learn more about them and gain some context regarding their newly released material. Even so, the lack of context before our ears take over the judgment process is understandable. Their music isn’t sugar-coated with modern sounds that attempt to create the grandeur of arena atmospheres (which often fail to do so). Instead, it is pure and raw—completely unpolished, rough, yet in a genuinely good way. This makes me appreciate the consistency between their press materials and the music they play.

There’s no need for an extensive music encyclopedia to appreciate their sound. Every note they play feels crisp, without unnecessary complexity or elements that are difficult to grasp. Their debut carries the feeling that the only thing you need to anticipate is pure joy. I can easily imagine a song like “Larry” being sung loudly in unison at every house gig they perform. This mental image—despite never having personally experienced it—convinces me that this band has real potential and deserves a wider audience.

Moreover, their debut release has received direct support from Kiki of D’Masiv, whose extensive experience in the Indonesian pop music industry undoubtedly adds valuable insight. Armed with material that is already compelling from the start, Kiki’s involvement helps Ache refine their music, not only keeping it pure but also giving it a sentimental touch that resonates on a deeper level.
