LONDON – A new chapter for a Beastie Boys veteran unfolds as Mike D announces his debut solo album, offering a deeply personal sonic exploration.

Mike D, a founding member of Beastie Boys, has announced his debut solo album, Thank You, scheduled for release on August 28th via Capitol Records. This marks the first full-length original material from a Beastie Boys member since 2011’s Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. The album emerged from low-pressure home studio sessions with his sons Skyler and Davis.

“True Colors” serves as the third single from Thank You, following “Switch Up” and “What We Got”. Described as a “buzzy, pensive, breakbeat-powered wall of acid rock,” the track showcases Mike D’s evolving sound. The album’s production also involved Carter Lang, Jared Solomon, Ging, Jason Lader, Eddie Ruscha, and Tyran Donaldson, with mixing by Derek “MixedByAli” Ali and mastering by Nicolas de Porcel.

A Post-Beastie Boys Reckoning: Unveiling Identity and Creative Joy

Mike D’s “True Colors” inaugurates his debut solo album, Thank You, a project born from introspection after Adam Yauch’s 2012 passing. Recorded in his home studio, the album features collaborations with his sons, Davis and Skyler, who also form his backing band, 5D. This familial dynamic allowed Mike D to “learn how to feel all over again” within an unvarnished creative process, as detailed in whisp.fm’s deep dive into “True Colors” by Mike D.

Lyrically, “True Colors” explores guarded truths and self-possession, aligning with Mike D’s view of Thank You as “musically pretty immature, and lyrically a little bit more mature.” The song’s core sentiment, a defiant unveiling of one’s “true colors,” gains bravery in a “strange and dark” world that devalues art. The track concludes with an energetic rhythm, reflecting a renewed zest for life and creation, embracing “happy accidents” and playful commitment to the creative journey.
