From the project's inception, frontman Olli Appleyard has maintained that this is more than just a band; it's a work of art.
Static Dress was formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire, in 2018 by vocalist Olli Appleyard, drummer Sam Kay, guitarist Tom Black, and bassist Connor Reilly, all of whom had previously been members of the band Galleries. Appleyard envisioned Static Dress as a platform to integrate music with visual branding and multimedia elements, treating the project as a personal artistic portfolio. The band quickly distinguished themselves through an enigmatic aesthetic, incorporating VHS-inspired visuals and cryptic narratives into their output.
Their debut single, “Clean,” was released on August 14, 2019, marking the beginning of a series of standalone singles. This period saw the band make their live debut and support other acts on tour. In 2021, Kay and Black departed, leading to the recruitment of Sam Ogden on drums and an initially anonymous guitarist, Contrast, later revealed as Vincent Weight. This era culminated with the release of the demo tape TBC in September 2021 and the Prologue… (Comic Book Soundtrack) EP on December 3, 2021, which was accompanied by a comic book written by Appleyard, solidifying their commitment to a continuous story across various media.

Static Dress announced their debut album, Rouge Carpet Disaster, in February 2022, releasing it on May 18. The album, produced by Erik Bickerstaffe of Loathe, featured singles like “Such a Shame” and “Fleahouse.” This release was met with critical acclaim, with some critics citing the band as a frontrunner in the “scene metalcore revival” and “post-hardcore revival.” The album’s success propelled Static Dress to a wider audience, leading to tours supporting acts like Knocked Loose and Loathe.
In May 2023, Static Dress signed with Roadrunner Records, swiftly announcing a “Redux” version of their debut album. This period saw the release of Rouge Carpet Disaster (Redux) Volume 2 and Volume 3 in 2023, which offered reimagined versions of album tracks and expanded the narrative. Further multimedia projects included a small run of their How I Hurt Myself demo tape in 2023, and the release of singles “Crying” (2024) and “Face” (2025). The band also released Rouge Carpet Disaster: the Video Game in 2024, an 8-bit Game Boy Color game that delved deeper into the album’s lore.
Injury Episode is likely to catapult Static Dress even further than before as they expertly display their artistry with unbridled genuineness and creativity.
The year 2026 marked a new chapter for Static Dress with their signing to Sumerian Records, followed by the release of the single “Human Props” in January. Their highly anticipated second album, Injury Episode, was released on May 29, 2026. This album was described as a commentary on the commodification of art and scroll culture, continuing the band’s tradition of weaving complex themes into their music.
Accompanying Injury Episode, Static Dress further expanded their multimedia universe with a sequel to their Game Boy Color game and a psychological horror game titled The Magistrate’s Loop. The band also initiated a series of intimate, phone-banned live performances called “Panic Room” shows, designed to immerse the audience fully in the artistic experience. With a solidified lineup featuring Olli Appleyard (vocals), Vincent Weight (guitars), George Holding (bass), and Sam Ogden (drums), Static Dress continued to push the boundaries of their genre, aiming for a sound that is both expansive and deeply human.
