Career History
2015–2020: Domestic Establishment

ATARASHII GAKKO! emerged in Japan, cultivating a distinct identity before their international pivot.

“In a time when only exemplary citizens are acknowledged, we strive to defy a narrow-minded society by embracing individuality and freedom.”

Formed in 2015, ATARASHII GAKKO! (then known as Atarashii Gakkou no Leaders) began their career by establishing a unique presence in the Japanese music scene. The quartet, comprising Mizyu, Rin, Suzuka, and Kanon, quickly became known for their self-choreographed, high-energy performances and a philosophy that challenged societal norms. Their initial foray into recordings included the digital single “Gakkou Ikeya” in 2016, followed by their major debut under Victor Entertainment in June 2017 with the single “Dokubana”.

This period saw the release of their first albums, including Maenarawanai in 2018 and Wakage Ga Itaru in 2019, which showcased their blend of J-pop, rock, and jazz elements. By 2020, the group had already released “Otonablue,” a track that would later achieve widespread recognition, and secured a partnership with the international label 88rising, setting the stage for their global expansion.

2021–2023: International Launch & Viral Momentum

A partnership with 88rising propelled ATARASHII GAKKO! onto the global stage, achieving viral success.

"NAINAINAI" marked our first major global push, introducing our unfiltered expression to new audiences.

The year 2021 marked a significant shift for ATARASHII GAKKO! as they made their worldwide debut with 88rising, releasing the single “NAINAINAI.” This collaboration provided a platform for their music to reach a broader international audience, leading to their first major global push. They expanded their international presence through digital platforms and performances, including their debut at the Head in the Clouds festival in Los Angeles in November 2021. The group further solidified their global efforts with the release of the EP SNACKTIME in 2021, featuring tracks that blended J-pop, hip-hop, and funk influences.

The momentum continued to build, culminating in 2023 with the viral explosion of “Otonablue,” particularly on TikTok, which significantly broadened their global recognition. This period also saw the release of EPs such as Ichijikikoku and Maningen, both of which entered the Top Ten on the Japanese album charts. Capping off a period of international growth, ATARASHII GAKKO! made their U.S. television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in December 2023, performing “Tokyo Calling.”

2024–Present: Global Impact & Mainstream Success

Solidifying their international presence, ATARASHII GAKKO! achieved mainstream recognition and industry accolades.

"We've dreamed of the day that all four of us would be here, standing on our own feet on this legendary stage."

The year 2024 saw ATARASHII GAKKO! reach new milestones in their career. They performed their first show at the Nippon Budokan, titled “Seishun Shurai” (“Invasion of Youth”), to an audience of 12,000 fans. Their global presence was further amplified by appearances at major international festivals, including Coachella. “Otonablue” continued its ascent, reaching the top 40 on U.S. radio airplay charts, underscoring their crossover appeal.

In June 2024, the group released their third album, AG! Calling. Their increasing influence was recognized with the Special International Music Award at the 66th Japan Record Awards in November 2024. Looking ahead to 2025, ATARASHII GAKKO! is set to celebrate their 10th anniversary with a special show at Makuhari Messe, titled ‘Declaration — 10 Years of Breaking Out with Individuality and Freedom,’ alongside the release of their best album, Atarashii Gakko no Susume. They also received multiple accolades at the 2025 Music Awards Japan, including Best Japanese Dance-Pop Artist and Best Dance Performance for “Otonablue.”
